Zelda Rafai
Zelda is a dedicated Rotuman artist and storyteller hailing from the districts Noa’tau, Oinafa, and Itu’tiu in Rotuma. As a passionate performer, she has been an integral part of Rako for over six years, now serving as the principal performing artist and dance leader. In addition to her artistic contributions, Zelda adeptly handles the administrative tasks for Rako, ensuring the smooth operation of the ensemble.
Zelda's impressive talents have graced both local and international stages, including notable performances at the esteemed Bluesfest, the Pacific Dance Festival in New Zealand in 2018 and 2023, Sydney Opera House, Spaghetti Circus, Woodford Folk Festival, and the Global Climate Action event in San Francisco to name a few. Her dance repertoire showcases her versatility, incorporating Traditional Rotuman, Pacific contemporary, and various Pacific dance styles, including those from Tahiti and the Cook Islands, as well as Fire dance.
A true advocate for her culture, Zelda is committed to sharing the beauty of her heritage through music and dance. Her involvement in projects aimed at reviving lost cultural artifacts, such as the Suru, reflects her deep love for her roots. Known for her hardworking nature and commitment to learning new skills, Zelda embodies the spirit of perseverance and creativity. Through her art, Zelda hopes to inspire the youth to embrace and cherish their cultural identities, fostering a sense of pride in their heritage.
