Master Steven John

Steven John, originally from Rotuma, is a master weaver and cultural practitioner whose journey reflects his lifelong commitment to preserving and celebrating Rotuman culture. From a young age, Steven demonstrated a natural talent for sculpture and weaving, restoring statues and creating new works that embodied his cultural heritage. By 17, he had begun refining his skills, which later earned him recognition through commissions for significant works, including statues for churches across the Pacific. His award-winning sculptures, such as Tobe, represented Fiji at the Melanesian Arts Festival in 2006, securing 1st and 2nd place and showcasing his exceptional talent.

Now an integral part of Rako Pasefika, Steven’s expertise in crafting suru headpieces plays a pivotal role in the group’s performances, adding visual richness and cultural authenticity to their storytelling. His workshops provide participants with a hands-on opportunity to learn the intricate techniques and historical significance of suru headpieces, deepening their connection to Rotuman culture. Steven’s contributions extend beyond the stage, fostering cultural conservation and ensuring these traditions are celebrated and preserved for future generations. His work reflects not only his personal journey of artistic growth but also his enduring commitment to enriching the cultural identity of his community and the wider Pacific region.
